Hi from Blind Bay
Hi All! I’m Claire Burgoyne from Shuswap Lake in B.C. The first week of each MET course is always exciting. I look forward to discovering who I know from previous classes and to meeting new people. This term I’m taking courses eight and nine. I’m a bit nervous about this course as I feel out of my comfort zone but at the same time recognize that as a great spot to be in to learn. In addition to ETEC 522 I’m taking a drama summer intensive the first week in July on campus at UBC.
My passions are mostly art related. A new undertaking is working as artistic director for a newly created community arts centre. A friend and I are working together to secure space, hire teachers, and offer classes to students ages two to adult. It’s encouraging to be at a stage where we’re about to start taking registrations for classes beginning Sept. 2012. My paid position is just as much fun. I work as a Fine Arts teacher for an independent DL school. My students are in grades 10-12 dance, drama, and visual arts. Dance and drama students participate in blended programs in which they earn credit for their participation in community dance and theatre classes and performances. Art classes are 100% online and include beginner to advanced levels and AP options. At this time of year I use my spare time for gardening. Currently my husband and I are hardscaping the front yard with a plan to be ready to plant our front gardens by early June.
I look forward to working with all of you during this course. You can contact me at cl.burgoyne(at)gmail(dot)com.

Hi Claire, what a beautiful place to live, and to also have creative outlets in your professional and personal life must be wonderful (especially this time of year). I’m also out of my comfort zone with this course, and looking forward to getting comfortable and learning in this incredible diverse group.

Hi Claire,
I believe we were in a course together earlier this year … I remember being fascinated by your teaching position and looking up Blind Bay on google maps – so pretty!
I am happy to join you and Claire in the ‘discomfort zone’. We can all keep each other company and hopefully support one another and make it a more comfortable place.

Hi Gillian,
You’re correct; we were in 530 together.
There’s comfort in knowing that others are like me and out of their zone of comfort. Even though I’m nervous I’m also really excited about this course. I think some journalling is in order and maybe a flight path (as in 565).

Hi Claire,
Nice to see you again! I’ll be in Blind Bay celebrating my parents’ 50th wedding anniversary on the May long weekend. It’ll be a crazy busy weekend, but I will wave at your house

Hi Janet,
Maybe by then we’ll have our first retaining wall built and you’ll notice some improvements over last year. If you have time for a visit drop by.

Hi Kenton,
As a kid I visited Shuswap Lake every summer and loved every minute I spent here. I feel very fortunate to be able to live in my childhood vacation destination. I have to admit we took a gamble moving here as neither my husband nor I had jobs waiting. It’s all worked out though.
Looking forward to working with you.

Nice to see you too Jon.
I’m not sure how many courses we’ve been in together. In hind-site I wish I’d kept track of who I’d connected with in each course.

Hi Claire,
Great to see you again! I have to ask, how do you do it all and still have time to garden?? Good for you for starting a community arts centre! Are the teaching positions paid? My mom is an artist and teaching is her forte – she might be interested!
Looking forward to working together again!

Hi Danielle,
Nice to see you again too. Yes, the teaching positions are paid. This area has a number of extremely talented and skilled artists so there will be several part time art teachers. The biggest challenge so far is finding a ballet teacher. That said do tell your mom to contact me if she’s interested. My email is cl.burgoyne(at)gmail(dot)com or faces(at)gmail(dot)com
I don’t view gardening as work so there’s usually a bit of time for it. When I need time to process and reflect gardening is a perfect activity to get me into that space. Also, I don’t cook. My husband does that which frees up a nice chunk of time everyday:)
